At the Academy of Academic Excellence, student “dissertations” are a weekly event! Students select an interest/hobby of importance to them and sign up two weeks in advance to do research and prepare to demonstrate their knowledge to all the Academy Kids. Through self-directed learning, students show off their talents and interests.
PowerPoint presentations are popular as they help the student process their thoughts in sequence and add sight words & picture clues to deliver this information orally and accurately! Visual objects and items are brought in to enhance the attentiveness of the group listeners and to help make a connection to their subject kinesthetically. These presentations help develop initiative, research, public speaking, and leadership skills. Following their dissertation, the student becomes the professor, answering questions from their peers. All grade levels can participate in dissertations from Pre-K to 5th grade. The presentations can last from 10 to 40 minutes in duration!
